General Information

Overview

Tail Gunner was a vector graphics game from the point of view of, well, a tail gunner in a running space combat. The game was very simple (as most vector graphics games were), consisting of a highly responsive, small metal joystick and two square buttons -- one for firing lasers, and one for bringing up shields. Enemies came in waves of three, pursuing your ship from behind. Your job, as tail gunner, was to blow away the wave before it caught up to your ship. If you missed an enemy with your lasers, you could trigger shields which would bounce the missed enemy back and give you a second chance at him. Shields were limited by total time, so a large part of the skill of the game was timing shield usage perfectly, to get maximum efficiency. The game ended when a certain number of enemies evaded either your lasers or your shields.
